A new railway connection

On 11 May, Baltic Container Terminal received the first train from Dąbrowa Górnicza with containers of Baltic Rail, an international railway operator. It is the result of an agreement signed by Baltic Container Terminal and Baltic Rail for the services related to containers transported by this operator. This means that not only a new partner has been acquired, but it is another step to implement the concept of the Baltic-Adriatic intermodal transport corridor in Europe.

“The beginning of our cooperation with Baltic Rail AS means for BCT more than just another railway operator and greater number of containers to be handled at our terminal. It is first of all the first step to implement the concept of the Baltic-Adriatic intermodal transport corridor. Two railway connections per week will give us an opportunity to service cargo incoming from the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Austria and Hungary. After years of domination of major West European hubs (Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Rotterdam) on these markets, Gdynia has one more time become for them a real and effective alternative in the area of container transport, said Piotr Frąckowiak, Intermodal Manager in BCT.

The Baltic-Adriatic corridor has been included in the TEN-T Programme of the European Union which is being commenced in Polish ports and completed in ports of Croatia, Slovenia and Italy, and enables rapid, cheaper and more environmental-friendly transport of cargo. Currently, most of cargo transported along the north-south axis in Europe must be carried by TIRs by land or by sea around Europe.

Baltic Rail is now the only railway operator in BCT oriented towards trans-border transport. As a result of cooperation with the operator BCT will be able to reach cargo in the European interior. Trains from BCT will run from Dąbrowa Górnicza twice a week and thus provide a connection with Austria and Slovenia.

European Transport Corridors will also be one of the subjects to be discussed at the European Economic Congress in Katowice. Baltic Container Terminal specifically encourages to participate the session titled “European Transport Corridors on the North-South Axis" to be hosted by it. The session will be held on 15 May at 11:30 a.m. in Qubus hotel. Another attraction of this year’s European Economic Congress will be a container with a BCT-made model of Gdynia-Rijeka intermodal railway connections. The container will be provided for visitors at Plac Sejmu Śląskiego in Katowice from Sunday evening through Wednesday.
